Didn't Volvo tease the 2015 XC90 more than 6 months ago? Surely they've been working on that for longer than the Volvo Concept Estate. Personally, I think that the Concept Estate is a demonstration of a new Volvo design language that has been in the works since just after the XC60 concept back in 2007.

The current model hasn't sold as well. Go through the northeast or the northwest and you'll see quite a lot of the previous version. The current version still has issues dealing with the Ford parts which cut into vehicle reliability. In one model year Consumer Reports dropped the XC70 from recommended to not recommended. I've been waiting for the Ford issues to go away to buy the next Volvo. Well over 10 years old and at 170,000 miles the only issues we've had were due to Ford parts. The transmission is the only one that is troubling. In older Volvos, pre Ford, there were less issues and better durability.

Kinja'd!!! EChid > homoman
03/25/2014 at 16:46

Kinja'd!!!0

The reason the current version isn't selling well is because it doesn't make much sense on paper and faces much more competition than the previous generation did, not reliability. In fact, the current XC70 is both a lot more reliable and a lot better than the last gen. But now you can get loaded Explorers, Flexes, Acadias, MKXs, JGCs, etc. for the same money with more power and similar fuel economy.

Volvo was recently in the top 7 brands for reliability, so that's not the issue, especially with a car like the XC70 which uses fairly old powertrains and has been on the market for a while.

Kinja'd!!! EChid > Andrew Seifert
03/25/2014 at 16:48

Kinja'd!!!0

It may not sell well, but no Volvo does. They will likely bring it back, definitely before they would ever bring back the V70. The XC70 apparently has extremely high customer loyalty numbers, and it's crossover pretensions are perfectly on point for North America if they can improve the fuel economy and space issues.

Wow, an actually useful wagon that's shaped like a wagon and not a sedan with a slightly stretched roof! It also looks like that slight Coke bottle kick up at the flanks is going to be a Volvo trademark from now on. They missed out on it the first time it was popular in the '60s and '70s, but better late than never.

Kinja'd!!! homoman > EChid
03/25/2014 at 19:47

Really? Because the 2004 that we have, which was made up through 2006 had better than average reliability and was one of CR's recommended pic. The 2007 (the current model) was not recommended and has a worse than average repair record. The current model uses the more powerful T6 and still relies on the Ford transmission along with the electronics.

There is a market for people who do not want an Explorer, the MKX and higher profile vehicles like the XC90. Granted the XC60 is very nice, but that's meant for pretentious soccer mommies who want something small and stylish to go out to the Hamptons and cannot afford the Mercedes and wouldn't be caught dead in a Ford or a Lincoln. For those of us that need to the room to haul stuff around and want reliability and a car that can get out of it's own way while saving my neck (at least four times on black ice) with the computer controlled all wheel drive, I'll take another XC70 if they do a new version that's Ford free.

Exactly, I feel like '80s and '90s cars get an unfair stigma just because the trends of their time seem dated now. If you put yourself in the headspace of that era, you can understand the designs better. There are so many cool cars that were forgotten from those eras.

Kinja'd!!! Crentist > evilfacelessturtle (Hooning a Ford is Domestic Abuse)
03/27/2014 at 01:10

It's almost that certain designs can't be appreciated, or even understood in any other era. It's almost how watching reruns of a sitcom from the 90s is just so painful. At the time Friends was a huge hit. Try watching it now, outside of that period of time, and it's a train wreck. At least for me.

Kinja'd!!! EChid > homoman
03/28/2014 at 18:05

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh really? Because a look at Consumer Reports reveals that the reliability record of of the XC has only improved since 2004, and is significantly better than it was. It's also Recommended by CR as a new buy, right now. TrueDelta also indicates that the newer generation has significantly fewer issues, so I'd love to know where your facts are coming from. FYI, the 2007 XC70 was the last-year of that generation, not the first year of the current one. The XC90 and 70 has significant transmission issues in the 2003s/04s/05s as well, whereas Ford has hasn't had recent or significant issues with their transmissions. But by all means...

Your explanation for why people wouldn't want an XC70 is the very reason they don't sell in great numbers. The XC is a perfect vehicle if you down want _____, don't care about _____ and want this ______ but not _____ or ______. It's niche. Don't get me wrong, I love the XC70. It's one of my favourite vehicles, and a contender for a future purchase...but when viewed within the context of the ever-more-competitive luxury CUV market, they rarely are the logical choice. You have to *really* want one, and that's what Volvo has to change.

Thank you for correcting the mistake on the beginning of the current series.

My figures came from CR during 2009 when friends were debating between and XC70 or an XC90 and either new or low mileage off-lease.

Re transmission, when the issue was detected in our XC70 by the dealer during routine inspection the service manager's words were "you have a slight seal issue on the transmission. It's common with the Ford transmissions and worse in the current series. You have probably another 100K miles before it needs to be dealt with." That was within the last two years.
